True American Pride - Real Things to Celebrate About This Nation (#15)
The Magic of Saturday Morning Cartoons
“Sssshh...be vewwy, vewwy quiet. I'm hunting rabbit. Ha...ha..ha." ~ Elmer Fudd
Day 15 of my Things in America to Truly Be Proud Of celebration. Today I celebrate Saturday morning cartoons! Oh what fun they were! I have such great memories of us 8 Schnorenberg kids hugging our cereal bowls and watching these animated classics.
One of my early favorites was “The Adventures of Jonny Quest”, a series about a boy (Jonny - who spelled his name like I did!) who accompanied his scientist father (Doctor Benton Quest) on extraordinary adventures. And you couldn’t beat the names of the other members of the “Quest Team”! “Race” Bannon, the intelligence agent/bodyguard, Hadji Singh, Jonny’s best friend, and of course, “Bandit”, his faithful dog. I never missed a thrilling episode as the Quests battled evil and always “saved the day”!
Bur my all time favorites were the "Looney Tunes" bunch: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Tweety, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Elmer Fudd, and especially the RoadRunner and Wile E. Coyote! Truly classic characters! Funny, even still today!!.
Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny
Foghorn Leghorn and Egghead Jr.
My two favorites, Wil E. Coyote and the Roadrunner
And as one of my sisters reminded me, our introduction to the world of classical music and opera came from an unforgettable Bugs Bunny cartoon classic! “Rabbit of Seville”
Here’s a link to a clip from that cartoon if you want to watch it. Still makes me laugh!
To finish…how many of these Looney Tune catch phrases do you remember (and can you name who said them?)
"You're despicable!"..."What a maroon!"..."That's, I say, that's a joke, son!"..."That makes me very ANGRY!"... "Meep, meep." "Great horny toads!"
Ah...I could go on all day. Great memories. True Americana. Too bad Saturday morning TV isn't this rich any more. Cheers!
"That's all, folks!"
